International Tiger Day

Midori Paxton said, “ A healthy tiger population is an indicator of sustainable development in the 13 tiger range countries.”

International Tiger Day ,also known as World Tiger Day is observed to spread awareness about dangers faced by tigers. According to World Wildlife Fund for Nature(WWF) , “As top predators , wild tigers play an important role in maintaining the harmony of the planet’s ecosystem. By preying on herbivores, tigers help to keep the balance between the prey animals and the forest vegetation which they feed upon.” World Tiger Day was first observed in the year 2010 ,on July 29th ,at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia. A total of thirteen tiger range countries came together and decided a global goal to double the number of wild tigers by the year 2022. The theme for this international day is – “ Their survival is in our hands.” People across the world understood the significance of the day and contributed to celebrations in their own ways. Interestingly, India accounts for nearly 70% of the world’s total tiger population and has already achieved the target of doubling its number.

Tigers and forests are deeply rooted together. They live, breed and hunt in groves and as apex predators, these majestic species are a sign of a healthy ecosystem. Every year our students at STEM World School, the best International School in Kolkata, take initiative to celebrate the International Tiger Day with great enthusiasm. The tiny toddlers of our STEM World School exhibit their craft works by cut and paste method, do mask making activity and drawings to represent the conservation of tigers. In senior sections, we encourage the students to participate in different activities in English like debate, drama, impromptu on this sensitive issue like International Tiger Day.

Our school’s main target behind this to make the young minds aware to protect tigers and their habitat, reduce human-tiger conflict and conduct scientific research on tigers to help inform conservation strategies. On this note take an oath that, don’t strip the stripes from the scenery;

Save the Tiger!
